Tottenham Hotspur suffer potential injury blow as defender Ben Davies withdraws from Wales squad

According to the Evening Standard, defender Ben Davies has withdrawn from the Wales squad and will sit out their friendly against the Czech Republic on Tuesday, in what could be a potential injury blow for Tottenham Hotspur.

Currently on national duty with his country’s football team, Davies was last seen featuring in Wales’ 2-1 win over Austria, where he played the full ninety minutes of the World Cup qualifier as a Gareth Bale double fired his side to a good victory.

Davies’ withdrawal from the Welsh squad is likely to not be too detrimental to them, given that their next game is a mere friendly. However, Tottenham will be anxious to know about the player’s situation, given how he is a key player in defence for them in the Premier League.

The 28-year-old is a crucial part of manager Antonio Conte’s three-man system at the back, playing on the left side alongside Eric Dier and Cristian Romero this season. Typically a left-back, Conte has preferred to use Davies in a more central position while Sergio Reguilon and Ryan Sessegnon have often been seen manning the left flank when fit and available.

“Ben Davies has returned”

Although it was confirmed that the star had withdrawn from the Wales squad, the reason behind his withdrawal was not revealed. As a result, Tottenham will be left worried about his sudden decision to return to north London after playing a full game just days ago.

A statement from the Welsh FA released on Sunday read that the ex-Swansea man had returned to his club, while other players were available for the game against the Czech Republic.

“Following Thursday’s match, Ben Davies has returned to his club. All other players are available for Tuesday’s match.”

Although it is not known whether Davies returned to N17 due to injury or some other reason, perhaps personal, it could stand to affect Spurs’ plans for their next few PL games as they look to end the season strongly.

Currently in fifth place, the Lilywhites are three points behind the Gunners, who have a game in hand over us to hold an advantage in the race to finish in fourth place in the league table and ensure they play Champions League football.

Tottenham’s next game is against Newcastle United on the weekend, and hopefully, Davies is available to play in the fixture. Given that he has returned to Enfield from the Wales setup, the club can assess his situation first-hand and take a call on his availability soon.

The Magpies have been in good form since the turn of the new year, escaping the relegation zone and fighting their way up the league table. With Manchester United and West Ham United in close pursuit of fourth place behind us, a win against Eddie Howe’s men is crucial.
