Antonio Conte gives his verdict about the ‘top-four’ race in the PL as Tottenham Hotspur thrash Newcastle United

Speaking in the post-match presser as quoted by Football.London, Antonio Conte makes ‘top-four’ admission as Tottenham Hotspur bags convincing victory vs Newcastle United

The Lilwyhites entered the top four in stellar fashion with an impressive 5-1 victory over Newcastle United. Even the possibility of European football seemed like a distant dream during the starting months of the season when Nuno Espirito Santo was in charge.

That being said, this feat seems closer to reality keeping our recent results in mind. Spurs have now overtaken Arsenal to secure fourth position but our North London rivals still have two extra games in hand over us.

Speaking to reporters as quoted by Football.London, Antonio Conte gave his honest assessment regarding the race for top-four in the Premier League. He highlighted that other clubs are also within touching distance despite convincing victory against the Toons.

“Usually, when you change manager during the season it is because there are difficulties and for sure I found a situation to improve.”

“I think in the last period I was clear that I have seen my team, it’s now in the race because I have seen great improvement. If the player brings himself to another level it means that the team is going to be stronger than before. For sure we know very well that in this race there are other teams that maybe in this moment they have an advantage.”

Conte makes us dream again

Wing-backs have been an integral part of Conte’s formation and the fact that Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty got on the scoresheet against the Magpies shows how far we have come as a squad. The 52-year-old has also managed to reignite the spark in Harry Kane ever since his arrival at Hotspur Way.

The former Inter Milan manager has never been one to distort the truth, speaking frankly on most occasions. His belief in our current crop of players and their improvement is a testimony of how the tables have turned for the club from N-17.

Whilst there is still a long way, one can see us pivoting in a positive direction. The Italian manager may be on the cusp of converting us from doubters to believers but the Lilywhites will have to keep up the consistency should they want to play in the UEFA Champions League next season.

The club shouldn’t let any complacency creep through in their games as they head into the business end of the season. The North Londoners have exited from every other competition and this could possibly help us prepare accordingly for our upcoming fixtures.

As Conte said, ‘We have eight games, eight finals’ and that is the exact mentality we should be adopting for the rest of our games. Fingers crossed we make our way into Europe’s most prestigious competition next season as our faith has been renewed based on our recent outings.

Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham United, and Manchester United are good teams but it is nearly impossible for them to win all their games from hereon now. What we have to do is keep our heads down and take it game by game. With no other competitions to play in, the PL has our undivided attention.
