Tottenham Hotspur sent scouts to watch Darwin Nunez in Benfica’s 3-1 loss to Liverpool

According to Portuguese sources (h/t The Express), Tottenham Hotspur had sent scouts to watch Darwin Nunez in Benfica’s 3-1 loss to Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-finals. He was once again on the scoresheet, having scored the only goal for his side in the first leg defeat against the Reds.

Despite the defeat, Nunez put up yet another impressive display, and he even went blow to blow with Virgil van Dijk during the match. The striker certainly lived up to his name, having been the primary focus of the Portuguese side’s attack while putting in the effort throughout the game.

Tottenham have already been linked with the Uruguayan before the CL tie, and they have now assessed his profile ahead of a potential move. They were not alone, though, as Manchester City, West Ham United, Newcastle United, Arsenal and Manchester United were also scouting him during the fixture.

Spurs to target Nunez?

The need for an addition in the centre-forward role is pretty obvious at this point since we only have Harry Kane in our ranks. We cannot afford to go another full season with just Kane if there are ambitions to fight for titles under Antonio Conte across multiple fronts from the next campaign onwards.

As such, Nunez would no doubt be a great option to add to our ranks, plus he can also play as an inside forward from the left-hand side. That means Conte would be provided with the choice to utilise Kane and the Benfica ace together if necessary. Who knows, maybe the boss could look to replicate what he did with Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez at Inter Milan.

For that to happen, though, the North Londoners would need to bring in Nunez, which would not be an easy task with all these interested parties. We should especially keep an eye out for Man United, who have scouted him closely more than ten times so far.

Several other unknown PL sides were also present during yesterday’s game, but there are no confirmations whether they were there to watch Nunez or someone else. However, that does indicate the risk of a potential increase in competition as we near the summer transfer window.

Perhaps even Jurgen Klopp’s side could enter the fray if they want to, having scouted the 22-year-old in the past. Brighton and Hove Albion were also close to landing him twice at different points, which showcases the stern challenge that awaits us in the summer transfer window.

Fabio Paratici will be in line to face one of the biggest challenges of his tenure at N17 this summer. That is if we actively pursue Nunez to add him to the squad for the next season. Whether that will happen or not, though, would only be known in due time.
