Antonio Conte gives an update regarding Matt Doherty after Tottenham Hotspur defeats Aston Villa

Speaking to reporters after the victory vs Aston Villa as quoted by Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte gave us an update regarding the situation of Matt Doherty who picked up an injury in the first half of the game.

The 30-year-old wing-back started from the left flank with Emerson Royal starting from the right side. While the Irish defender has been a prominent presence under Antonio Conte, he sustained an injury and had to be substituted in the 21st minute of the game.

Sergio Reguilon was brought on to replace the former Wolverhampton Wanderers defender as Spurs ran riot at Villa Park. That being said, the early exit for Doherty would be sad news for the supporters especially because of his influence in recent games for the North London club.

In conversation during the post-match presser for the Aston Villa fixture as quoted by Football.London, Conte gave us his verdict regarding the situation of the Irish wing-back.

“I hope nothing serious. The doctors are going to check on him tomorrow. I hope nothing serious because he wanted to continue to play and then he later wanted to come out. I hope nothing serious because he’s now an important player for us.”

Doherty at Hotspur way

The former Wolves player had become an isolated figure under former boss Nuno Espirito Santo but has seen a resurgence under the current Italian manager. One can see glimpses of the magic that he showed at Molineux stadium.

Doherty had started to get into more attacking positions off late and was posing a grave threat to opposition defenders in recent memory. That was great news for the club faithful, and we hope that this run of form won’t be ruined by an injury that will keep him out for a long time.

The former Chelsea boss has managed to pivot the club in a positive direction and it remains to be seen whether the North London club can carry forward its form. It will also be interesting to see what the club’s plan of action would be should the 30-year-old be out for a long period considering his importance to the team.

That being said, most of the supporters in our fan base would echo the same thoughts as our manager regarding the situation. Whilst Emerson Royal can be an apt replacement on the right flank, Reguilon can deputise on the left side.

This wouldn’t be such a bad thing in the worst-case scenario but Matt Doherty has already got some good form going for him and losing a player of his calibre would certainly be a big loss to the club from N-17.
