Tottenham Hotspur want to sign AS Roma star Nicolo Zaniolo on loan with an obligation to buy

According to the Italian source Il Messaggero (h/t Evening Standard), Tottenham Hotspur are looking to sign AS Roma star Nicolo Zaniolo on a loan move while also including an obligation to buy option. The English side had signed Cristian Romero in a similar way, and they could be trying to repeat the same method once again this summer.

Tottenham have already made contact with Roma to discuss the possibility of signing Zaniolo in this summer transfer window. However, the former only wants to sign him on a loan deal but with an obligatory clause to make his move permanent in the future.

Jose Mourinho’s team is stated to be willing to entertain this proposal, so there could potentially be a significant update on this subject in the coming days. Spurs have already made additions to their ranks, and the Italian international may just be the fourth signing ahead of the next season.

Zaniolo to join Spurs soon?

The 22-year-old is on the back of an impressive campaign with the Serie A club, having netted eight goals and assisted nine times from 42 appearances across all competitions last season. Zaniolo has finally looked to be on track to achieve his full potential after seeing his progress halted by two long-term injuries.

Zaniolo also showcased great prowess deputising in different positions under Mourinho in the previous campaign. The former is primarily an attacking midfielder by trade, but he was mostly used as a right-winger by the former Tottenham manager.

Zaniolo has also featured as a second striker or even a centre-forward at times, which makes him a great asset for Antonio Conte if he joins us. That means signing the midfielder could be helpful for Conte by providing him with the means to change the system to the famed 3-5-2 formation that he had used in the past.

That being said, we have to wait and see whether a transfer would be possible, although this latest update certainly conveys that message. Then again, the North London club must now find an agreement with Zaniolo himself regarding the personal terms involved in a potential move.

Should Conte’s side end up signing Zaniolo in this manner, they would still have the ability to spend money on other areas since the midfielder would only be joining them on an initial loan deal. That’s a great piece of move from Fabio Paratici as we can have the freedom to improve other roles like centre-back or striker, for example, this summer.
