Antonio Conte wants Tottenham Hotspur forward Troy Parrott to press and be available for the pass

Troy Parrott has revealed that Antonio Conte has told him about the importance of the forward position in the team’s pressing. The Tottenham Hotspur manager also wants the player to be available for the pass when needed.

The 20-year-old Irishman wants to develop as a number nine. He hopes to find an appropriate loan move next season to gain more experience in that particular role.

Speaking at a Tottenham Hotspur Global football development session (h/t football.london), Parrott explained how Conte has been helping him understand what needs to be done as an attacking player.

“During training he came in and helped me with some little stuff. Just telling me what he wants from the attacking players and that’s all I can ask for really.”

Modern football is much more fast-paced and energetic, with teams constantly pressing the opponents. Top teams around the world follow this principle to gain as much possession of the ball as they can.

And the forward’s role is very important in the team winning the ball back quickly since they are usually the first ones to initiate the press when the opposing defence has the ball.

Apart from that, being able to hold on to the ball and bringing in other players into the game is an essential quality for a forward to have. Whether under pressure situations or during build-up play, world-class forwards are able to get the ball to their feet and build the attack.

“Our position is important for the press. It’s a different energy and then in possession just being an option and being available for players when they’ve got the ball. Making sure I’m there to receive the ball.”

Harry Kane is one of the best in the position in world football. The England captain was already a potent goalscorer before improving his link-up play. Especially under Jose Mourinho, the striker began to drop deep and help out the team more.

Kane is a reference for youngsters like Parrott to emulate. The 28-year-old is one of the best goalscorers. But in recent years, the striker has also set up many goals. The Englishman’s partnership with Son Heung-min is an example of his playmaking ability.

Parrott has made a handful of appearances for the senior side in North London. The 20-year-old has spent most of his time out on loan. Kane had a similar trajectory when he first started at Tottenham. Fans will hope the Ireland international follows the same path our vice-captain has.
