“Tough game playing against him”- Tottenham Hotspur’s Ben Davies wary of this Sporting CP star

Tottenham Hotspur’s Ben Davies says he is wary of Marcus Edwards threat ahead of Sporting CP tie

Marcus Edwards was brilliant for Sporting CP when Tottenham Hotspur faced them in the UEFA Champions League group stages earlier this season.

He had a dazzling solo run that required a smart save to deny Edwards a spectacular goal against his former club. The Primeira Liga club won 2-0 on that day courtesy of two late goals.

Edwards spent 12 years at Tottenham before leaving to join Vitoria Guimaraes on a free transfer in the summer of 2019. He only made one senior appearance for us during that time.

Edwards, now 23, is one of the most exciting players in the Portuguese top division. His dribbling ability and acceleration make him a very hard man for any defender to mark.

Davies is aware of that. The Wales international joined Spurs in the summer of 2014, when Edwards was with the youth ranks at Spurs. In fact, he was on the pitch for a few minutes with the English forward when he made his only appearance for the senior Tottenham side.

Ben Davies vs Marcus Edwards?

The two featured in our 5-0 EFL Cup win against Gillingham in September 2016. Davies is now set to face Edwards once again after doing so in the first group stage at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

He is wary of the threat he brings to the table. Speaking at a press conference before the game on Wednesday night in north London, Davies said (h/t Football.London):

“Marcus is a very good player. He’s very direct, he keeps control of the ball very well and he’s quick when he gets you in those situations. It’s going to be a tough game playing against him.”

“He’s got a bright future ahead of him. He’s shown he’s willing to go to somewhere where not a lot of young British have gone and worked hard. He’s reaping the rewards for it now.”

More Tottenham Hotspur News

Davies is right. There aren’t a lot of famous Englishman that have played in the Primeira Liga and perhaps Eric Dier and Edwards are the most famous of the lot. On Wednesday, let’s hope Davies and whoever plays as the left-wing-back, be it Ivan Perisic or Ryan Sessegnon, do well to minimize the threat from the Sporting winger.
