Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma told he deserves to be benched after Nottingham Forest loss

Tottenham Hotspur signed Yves Bissouma from Brighton & Hove Albion in the recently-concluded summer transfer window for a fee of £25million.

The Mali international was arguably one of Brighton’s best players since leaving LOSC Lille Metropole for the Premier League. He was a brilliant presence in manager Graham Potter’s midfield – putting in a shift at both ends of the pitch.

However, things haven’t gone to plan for him in north London. From Conte admitting earlier this season that the player was having a hard time adjusting to the tactics, to Bissouma playing just 581 minutes of league football, the Malian would aim to do better.

Given his ability, the 25-year-old would want to start more. For Jamie O’Hara, however, that remains a distant possibility if he continues to disappoint as he did in the 2-0 EFL Cup loss against Nottingham Forest earlier this season.

Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, the former Spurs man said:

“[Yves] Bissouma, for me, the player that we signed from Brighton ain’t the player that has turned up at Tottenham, that’s for sure. As a football player, you know you might not start every week. When you get an opportunity, you’ve got to take it.”

“You’ve got to have confidence in yourself and you go ‘right, now’s my chance – Carabao Cup, I’m going to get an opportunity. I’m going to show the gaffer what I’m about tonight’. And you come out and you put in a performance like that tonight. What do you expect? You’re going to be sat on the bench.”

Bissouma has yet to score or assist in a Tottenham shirt in his 17 competitive appearances so far. However, just seven of those have come from the starting XI.

He was handed a chance to impress against the Tricky Trees when he started alongside Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. He played the full 90 minutes but was subpar – playing stray passes, looking underconfident and not taking risks when in the final third.

Spurs play against Leeds United on 12 November in their final Premier League game before the season stops for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Bissouma would hope to make the starting XI once again, but it seems unlikely after his performance at the City Ground.
