Newcastle United battle Tottenham Hotspur for Eintracht Frankfurt defender Evan Ndicka

Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are said to be leading the race for Eintracht Frankfurt star Evan Ndicka ahead of the January transfer window, as per Italian outlet Romagiallorossa (h/t the Express).

The 23-year-old centre-back is one of the most impressive young players in his position playing in Germany and has left a lasting impression on Spurs and Magpies, who are said to have a strong interest in him.

AC Milan and AS Roma are also said to be interested in him. His situation at Frankfurt is complicated by his contract situation.

He is in the final year of his deal at the Waldstadion. This could mean that teams could get him on a fairly cut-price deal in the January transfer window if Frankfurt realise they cannot get him to sign a new contract.

Ndicka to Spurs?

Or, there is always the option of keeping him at the club and letting him leave as a free agent in the summer. Either way, Spurs would be wise to stay in touch with the situation.

Former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher has described the Frenchman as an ‘aggressive’ player. It remains to be seen if his playing style would be a potential hurdle for manager Antonio Conte.

We have an ‘aggressive’ defender of our own in Cristian Romero. What we can use is an experienced, level-headed leader at the back.

Eric Dier has been good but we can get someone better than him. The same applies to Ben Davies, who continues to play out of position as a left-sided centre-back.

Moreover, Clement Lenglet isn’t here permanently and is set to return to Barcelona in the summer transfer window. Ndicka, especially financially, makes a lot of sense in that regard.
