Journo claims Tottenham Hotspur are ‘admirers’ of Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has been named as a potential candidate to become Tottenham Hotspur boss in case Antonio Conte walks this summer.

The former Inter Milan and Juventus boss is yet to renew his contract in N17. He is in the final four months of his deal with no signs of a renewal on the horizon.

This could mean that Spurs would be on the lookout for a new manager within two years of hiring Conte to replace Nuno Espirito Santo. According to journalist Alex Crook of TalkSPORT on the Breakfast Show (h/t LeicestershireLive), Rodgers and Mauricio Pochettino are two candidates for the job.

“Maurico Pochettino, I’ve been told by more than one source, is really keen to go back to Spurs, he feels like he has unfinished business there. The other name that has been mentioned to me is Brendan Rodgers, Tottenham are also admirers of Brendan Rodgers. They feel that his brand of football will go down well.”

Pochettino, of course, is a man who brought this current Spurs into being – at least most of it. He transformed us into a top English side at a time when we were recovering from losing the likes of Gareth Bale and Luka Modric and needed a new identity.

He made us into a team which was no longer evidently considered as a stepping stone for top players. Rodgers, meanwhile, had a good stint at Liverpool where he notably led the Reds to a second-place finish in the 2013-14 campaign.

But is he the right man for the job? One can credit Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge to a huge extent for Liverpool’s success during that time, and the season that followed under Rodgers in Suarez’s absence was pretty poor.

He had a stint at Celtic where he won two league titles in just under three seasons. But his dominance was swiftly dismantled by Steven Gerrard’s Rangers, who, by the way, struggled massively at Aston Villa. Moreover, it isn’t controversial to suggest that the Premier League is a whole different gravy to the Scottish Premiership.

The Northern Irishman’s time at Leicester hasn’t been a success either as they struggle to find their way into European spots. Spurs could be a big job for him, one that entails big expectations and warrants a manager who is not afraid to impose his identity on the team.

Can he take us to a place where we are serious contenders for trophies? He could be a safe option on paper given his experience in British football, but we can surely do better. Poch, in that regard, could be a much better option.
