Tottenham Hotspur urged to appoint freshly-sacked Brendan Rodgers

Former Crystal Palace star Darren Ambrose has urged Tottenham Hotspur to appoint Brendan Rodgers after he was sacked by Leicester City this weekend.

The 39-year-old, who played as a midfielder, told TalkSPORT exclusively:

“I am going to say now I would take him at Spurs 100 per cent. Of course [Julian] Nagelsmann would be my first choice, I’m sure he would be for a lot of fans. But Brendan Rodgers plays the type of football and the style that Spurs supporters like.

“The job he did at Leicester was remarkable. Maybe it is time for a new voice at Leicester, but bring [James] Maddison along to Spurs with you and they’ll be absolutely flying.”

A lot to unpack here. Rodgers was sacked by Leicester City, who are currently sitting 19th in the league table. Julian Nagelsmann, meanwhile, has been linked with the Spurs job.

We can do better

However, it is believed that the German manager, who was sacked by Bayern Munich last month, wants a mini-hiatus and is in no hurry to choose his new club. But that doesn’t mean we resort to signing Rodgers.

The 50-year-old did not succeed in winning a trophy at Liverpool. Some would say the brilliance of Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge bloated Rodgers’reputation at Anfield.

He was pretty successful with a strong Celtic side in Scotland until Steven Gerrard took over the Rangers job and won the SPL title. He did a good job at Leicester City, managing a fifth-place finish in his first two seasons and an eight-placed finish last campaign.

But is this a manager that will take the club to greater heights when Antonio Conte or Jose Mourinho couldn’t? We can certainly do better. Rodgers will have sharper tools at Spurs than he did at Leicester City.

But he has shown nothing to warrant being our boss. Of course, tactically, he can bring something fresh here but on paper and going by reputation, Spurs can bring in a bigger, better name. Re-hiring free-agent Mauricio Pochettino seems like a safer option at this point but it has been claimed that Spurs have snubbed him.
