Tottenham Hotspur plan to beat Chelsea to Luis Enrique
According to the Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur have planned to contact former Spain national team manager Luis Enrique and hijack his move to Chelsea.
Enrique is a well-known name in the footballing world, having managed top clubs like Barcelona and the Spanish national team. He has already been interviewed by London rivals Chelsea and Spurs are aiming to speak to the Spaniard, possibly as early as this week.
However, it is important to note that there is no suggestion that Enrique is Tottenham’s top target or that he will be offered the job. However, he is clearly high on their agenda. Tottenham also has other options in mind, with Julian Nagelsmann near the top of their wanted list.
Enrique is keen on resuming his coaching career in England and is known to be interested in the Chelsea post. However, Chelsea has placed Frank Lampard in caretaker charge until the end of the season.
Tottenham, on the other hand, have Cristian Stellini as their acting head coach following the departure of Antonio Conte. Enrique is currently out of work, as is Nagelsmann, although the German is believed to favour waiting until the summer to start a new job.
It is no secret that Chelsea and Spurs are likely to target some of the same managerial candidates. As well as Enrique and Nagelsmann, Tottenham are understood to admire Feyenoord head coach Arne Slot and Burnley’s Vincent Kompany.
Former manager Mauricio Pochettino is also an option for the club but the links have died down in recent times. However, the Argentinian also finds himself out of work and knows the club better than other candidates.
The club has a lot of potential and a talented squad, but it needs a strong leader to take it forward. Whoever takes on the role of head coach will have big shoes to fill, but the Spurs faithful will be behind them all the way.
