Tottenham Hotspur to compete with Barcelona for Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte
Tottenham Hotspur are set to compete with Spanish giants Barcelona to acquire the services of Manchester City star Aymeric Laporte, according to Fichajes.
The Sky Blues are open to parting ways with the Spain international and will not stand in his way. To that end, the Blaugrana have the defender on their radar.
However, Financial Fair Play is going to be a consideration for the La Liga outfit in their pursuit of the centre-back. Yet Xavi is keen on adding the experience of the 28-year-old to his squad next summer.
But Spurs are interested in Laporte as well. Apart from the North London side, Paris Saint-Germain are also eyeing him. The centre-back has also been linked with a return to former club Athletic Bilbao.
The Spain international made his way through the youth ranks at the San Mames side. Subsequently, in the winter window of 2018, City came calling for the defender’s signature.
Since then, the 28-year-old has been a key player for Pep Guardiola’s team. However, after missing the start of the 2022/23 campaign with injury, he now finds himself on the bench most often.
Tottenham’s backline consists of Cristian Romero, Eric Dier, Ben Davies, Clement Lenglet and Davinson Sanchez. However, apart from the Argentine, our defenders have not been consistent.
Spurs have been shaky at the back for most of the campaign. We cannot seem to keep a clean sheet or hold on to a lead. That has hindered our chances of getting into the top four in the English top flight.

Therefore, we evidently need to add more quality to the backline next summer. Laporte is a quality defender with a lot of PL experience. However, it remains to be seen whether the North London side will be able to pip the competition to his signature.
