Tottenham target James Ward-Prowse linked with Southampton exit
According to Birmingham Live, Tottenham Hotspur target James Ward-Prowse will be allowed to leave Southampton in the summer should the Saints fail to avoid relegation.
Ward-Prowse has been a crucial player for Southampton since he broke into their first team in 2012. He is a midfielder known for his set-piece abilities, which have helped him become a key player for both Southampton and the England national team.
Southampton have told Ward-Prowse he can leave the club if they are relegated from the Premier League this season. With the Saints currently sitting rock bottom of the table, that possibility is looking increasingly likely that they go down this time.
If that does happen, it’s thought that Aston Villa will be at the front of the queue to sign the 28-year-old midfielder. They had a £25 million bid rejected in the summer of 2021, but they are still said to be keen on the player.
However, it seems that Tottenham are also interested in signing Ward-Prowse. Spurs have struggled in midfield this season, with the existing options failing to impress on a consistent basis.
Ward-Prowse’s set-piece abilities would also be a major asset for Tottenham. The London club has struggled to score from dead-ball situations this season, and Ward-Prowse’s delivery from corners and free-kicks could be just what they need to turn their fortunes around.
However, it’s not just his set-piece abilities that make Ward-Prowse an attractive prospect for Tottenham. He is also an excellent all-around midfielder who is comfortable in possession and has a good range of passing.
If Tottenham does decide to make a move for Ward-Prowse, they will face stiff competition from Aston Villa and possibly West Ham and Newcastle United, who are also said to be interested in the player.
