Chris Sutton defends Tottenham Hotspur star Pedro Porro after criticism

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Chris Sutton has defended Tottenham Hotspur star Pedro Porro amidst the immense criticism that he has been receiving in recent times.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Pedro Porro has had a tough start to life in North London, with his defensive abilities and performances coming under scrutiny since his arrival from Sporting Lisbon in January.

Porro’s struggles were particularly highlighted in Tottenham’s 6-1 defeat to Newcastle United, where he was played as a full-back and had a difficult afternoon against a Newcastle side that was in fine form.

However, Sutton believes that the responsibility for Porro’s struggles lies with Cristian Stellini, rather than the player himself. The management of the players has not really been great in recent times.

He pointed out that to suggest that they cannot defend is absolutely not acceptable. After a poor start to life in England, Sutton has claimed that Porro could eventually turn over a new leaf and the criticism on him is unfair.

Speaking about the situation, here is what Sutton had to say about the criticism that the Spaniard is receiving.

“That is ridiculous, Micah [Richards]. To suggest that they can’t defend at all. That’s absolutely ridiculous.”

Sutton’s defence of Porro is not unfounded. After all, the Spaniard was brought in as a wing-back, and his attacking abilities were one of the main reasons he came here, although he is adept defensively.

It’s worth remembering that Porro is still adapting to Premier League football and is only 23 years old. He has plenty of time to improve his game and become the player that Tottenham hoped he would be when they signed him.

It’s now up to Ryan Mason, who has taken over from Stellini as interim manager, to get the best out of him. Let’s hope the noise around Porro dies down.
