Tim Sherwood backs Ryan Mason for permanent Tottenham Hotspur job

Former Tottenham Hotspur player and manager Tim Sherwood has backed Ryan Mason to take over as the permanent head coach after the dismissal of Antonio Conte and Cristian Stellini.

Currently, the ex-midfielder has taken charge of the North London side on an interim basis. In the game against Manchester United, after going two goals down in the first half, Spurs made an inspiring comeback as the game finished 2-2.

Speaking on talkSPORT (h/t Evening Standard), Sherwood, who spent a few months in Tottenham’s dugout during the 2013/14 season, believes Mason could be the right man for the job.

“I listened to a clip there, ‘why shouldn’t it be Ryan Mason?’. Well, why shouldn’t it be?

“We’ve had Conte, we’ve had Jose Mourinho, they’re the trophy managers and what did they do? So you could do a lot worse.”

The 31-year-old has been in and around Spurs for some time now. After making his way through the youth ranks at the North London side, the ex-midfielder established himself in our first team.

Mason has also been in Tottenham’s coaching setup since 2018 in various capacities. He previously took charge of the team in the 2020/21 campaign in a temporary capacity.

After the dismissal of Jose Mourinho, the former Hull City star managed six games in the Premier League, winning four and losing twice. Under Conte, the 31-year-old served as the technical coach.

As caretaker manager, the ex-midfielder has once again shown that he is capable of bringing the best out of some of the stars. The fight and desire to win against United was evident.

Over the years, Spurs have had a number of established managers in our dugout. However, none of them have been able to end the North London side’s trophy drought. Mauricio Pochettino, who was an up-and-coming head coach back then, was the only one who got us close to a title.

Therefore, while Mason is inexperienced, his connection with Tottenham is undeniable. But it remains to be seen whether Daniel Levy will decide to give the 31-year-old the reins at Spurs for next season.
