Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg transfer to Atletico Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur “not certain”

Tom Barclay of The Sun is “not certain” that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will leave Tottenham Hotspur for Atletico Madrid in the ongoing transfer window.

Los Rojiblancos have been linked with a move for the Denmark international this summer. However, it remains to be seen whether the La Liga outfit will be able to get a hold of the 27-year-old’s signature in the coming weeks.

Speaking to The Tottenham Way on Apple Podcasts, Barclay has tipped Hojbjerg to feature under Ange Postecoglou despite criticism around the midfielder’s style of play.

“As a lot of us including myself have written, Atletico Madrid have been in talks, they definitely want him. But, as I said about a week ago, I’m not as certain that he’ll definitely leave as I was before.

“As much as some fans belittle his passing sideways, passing backwards, he’s obviously ultra-professional, he’s very reliable and there’s a reason he’s played at the level he has. If that move doesn’t transpire, I think he could still have quite a key role this season.”

Tottenham signed the Danish national in the summer of 2020 from Southampton. Since then, he has been a key player for us under various managers. The likes of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte counted on him.

In the previous campaign, the midfielder was one of the few players who put in some decent performances for the North London side. In 44 appearances in all competitions, he found the back of the net five times and provided seven assists.

During pre-season, Hojbjerg has done well. With just a few days to go for the start of our Premier League campaign against Brentford, the Danish national started the friendly game against Shakhtar Donetsk on 6 August.

Ange Postecoglou has several other options in midfield. Yves Bissouma is available at the gaffer’s disposal, but the former Brighton & Hove Albion star did not have the best of debut campaigns at Spurs.

Oliver Skipp, Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Pape Matar Sarr are also still in our ranks. But it will be interesting to see how many of the aforementioned players will still be at the club at the end of the transfer window.

Considering Hojbjerg’s experience and leadership qualities, it would seem wise to keep a hold of him. But will the Danish national remain at the North London side in the coming weeks? Only time will tell.
