Astute business or stop-gap? Werner rejoins Spurs as attacking hunt continues

Tottenham Hotspur announced the arrival of Timo Werner, who will arrive in North London on another loan spell from RB Leipzig following a successful spell at White Hart Lane last season. However, despite bringing the German international to the N17, Spurs will be looking to further bolster their offensive line in the summer transfer window, per Football. London Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold.

Internally, bringing in Werner is seen as an astute piece of business, despite the splitting opinions of the supporters. The former Chelsea ace wanted to continue being a part of the Spurs project, and his desire to stay, complemented by his relationship with Ange Postecoglou, unlocked the possibility of bringing him to North London for another season. Moreover, Werner comes to White Hart Lane without any loan fee, which appears to be a financially feasible transfer despite his lofty wages.

Werner arrival paves the way for the summer offensive push

The Australian gaffer in charge of Tottenham sees Werner’s signing as a valuable addition to his roster, as the 28-year-old provides depth to his squad without infecting Spurs transfer budget.

Gold has clarified that Werner is not the answer to Tottenham’s offensive recruitment plans this summer. With the likes of Bryan Gil and Ivan Perisic bidding adieu to White Hart Lane this summer, they will look to add at least some new faces to the forward line. Signing a marquee striker is one of the priority transfers for Spurs this summer, and Gold is on the priority list of the club.

Writing about bringing Werner back to Tottenham and the road ahead for Spurs, Gold wrote in his column:

“Now that decision has been made. Postecoglou wants a number of attacking signings, and from that point of view, extending Werner’s loan could be an astute piece of business as it would not bite into Tottenham’s transfer budget for those roles this summer, yet would add an experienced Champions League-winning attacker to a squad that needs to expand to handle Europa League football next season in a bigger fixture schedule.”
