The race to sign Ross Barkley seems to be taking a toll on Tottenham and Mauricio Pochettino. The Daily Mail reports that Poch will give up on the Evertonian and move for former Spurs midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson for £25m.
.Amidst the cries of pain and anguish from our fans, Poch isn’t willing to stump out the fairly ludicrous £50 million that Everton want for the 23-year-old and will bring back the Icelandic star that has shown his abilities after making the return to Swansea.
Gylfi did keep the Swans in the Premier League thanks to his nine goals in the competition. Barkley, for his part, has had a stop-start season and even a bit of a rollicking by Ronald Koeman hasn’t really gotten him into playing great football.
Barkley has one year left on his contract and Pochettino would be spending half that amount in signing the 27-year-old Sigurdsson. While the Englishman might have the edge as being younger than Sigurdsson, the decision to sign the Swansea man does make more sense.
A tough start at the Lane
Gylfi’s first stint with us didn’t work out too well but he has to step up and play for a big club again. Playing for us would be a great option for him though, not only do we have a great manager that can take a player to their potential but Gylfi knows the club, fans and can slot into the team from the first day.
The Swansea man did score 13 goals in 83 games for us but that number has to get better. Sigurdsson is also wiser from his first stint and will perform better if he does turn up in the white of Spurs next time around.
Poch knows he has a great base of players here and a few quality signings here and there can lead us to the holy grail of the Premier League title. Gylfi could be the start of something special next season as we look to go one step better than this one.
