Deal Close – Tottenham In Pole Position To Sign U21 Euro Winner From Bundesliga

Tottenham are targetting Hoffenheim defender Jeremy Toljan according to Portuguese outlet Record (via Sun). The 22-year-old is considered as one of the best young defenders in the Bundesliga and we seem to be in pole position to sign the German up.

Toljan played in 21 games for the Bundesliga side last season and got one goal and an assist too. The 22-year-old can play in a number of positions including right-back, left-back and even in midfield, though his preferred position seems to be as a left-back.

The youngster did help the U21 Germany side to win the Euros and with only one year left on his contract, he would be a great deal, should we sign him from the Bundesliga side. The report further adds that Benfica are also looking to add Toljan to their side but we are just ahead of the Portuguese side for the youngster’s signature.

The versatility of the defender is one reason why he could be a hit with Mauricio Pochettino. Toljan can play as part of the back three or even as a wing-back, depending on our formation and what Poch has planned out for him.

Our Verdict

We know that Poch can work wonders with young players and Toljan still has a lot to learn and develop his game. Signing for Tottenham would be a great move given that Poch is very hands on with the young players in the side and should he get his way, the 22-year-old would become a mainstay for us over a number of years.

There is a long way to go in the transfer window and even if we don’t sign any big names, we need to bring players in to at least improve upon our performances from last season.

We do have a brilliant first team and only need to add a few players to increase our squad depth. That was an issue we suffered from last season, we already have sold Kyle Walker and haven’t brought in any players, which is a worry for most of us.

Toljan might not be the big money signing that we all have been craving for but it is a start and hopefully, we can close the deal for the German soon.

  1. Yes we need more depth – but there are no obvious holes in the first team. We don’t need a big money, already peaked player for the back up roles we need for depth. A couple of develop able players will add strength and create excitement.

  2. Yes, we do need more depth. But we had a serious injury list last season and still finished second with a record points total. So I agree. We will be getting Lamela, Rose and Winks back. Surely Janssen, N’Koudou and Sissoko will contribute more than last season if we keep any/all of them. Pochettino has already said he intends on giving four highly rated youth players more playing time. The current squad should improve organically regardless of signings. All these considerations suggest Spurs will be a better squad next season prior to transfers – and there will be some transfers.
