Tottenham have completed their first summer acquisition as the club has confirmed that Davinson Sánchez has joined the Lilywhites from Ajax for a fee of £42 million.
The Independent has reported that Tottenham will be paying an initial fee of £28 million up front, besides a £14 million performance-related bonus payment, taking the total structure to £42 million.
The Telegraph earlier reported that initially there were some disputes as to how quickly Tottenham will pay the fee, but it has been resolved eventually. Should the deal rise to its full value of £42 million, Sánchez’s signing will become Tottenham’s most expensive transfer ever, eclipsing Moussa Sissoko’s £30 million move to White Hart Lane last season. Sánchez has joined the club on a deal that runs until the summer of 2023.

The youngster started his professional career with a Colombian club América de Cali before moving to Atlético Nacional. His impressive form and blazing performances earned him the attention of the likes of Flamengo and Barcelona. The youngster, however, was keen on playing senior football, hence rejected the Catalonians and decide to join Ajax for a reported €5 million fee.
Sánchez was a complete revelation for Ajax in his debut season, making 31 league appearances and despite being a defender, scored 6 goals and 2 assists, finishing as the club Player of the Year.
“I would like to thank the coach, management, players and fans of Ajax. It is a great move for me to come here to develop my career,” he said as quoted by Independent.
“I am very excited to be signing for such a famous club as Tottenham Hotspur. I am looking forward to working with Mauricio Pochettino and the players and meeting everyone there.”
Having sold Kyle Walker for a fee that could rise upto £50 million, and Kieran Trippier’s recent injury issues have further highlighted the need of a strong back-up. And this is when the young Davinson Sánchez comes into the picture. The versatile Colombian is capable of acquiring the central as well as the right side of the backline and will provide Tottenham a much-needed depth.
Meanwhile, the Lilywhites are also interested in signing Celta Vigo’s Pape Cheikh Diop but are yet to negotiate a fee.
