The Express claims that Tottenham sent scouts to keep tabs on Frenkie de Jong after failing to sign any players in the summer window.
The 21-year-old Ajax star was also watched by Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona but decided to stay at the Dutch side this season, as per the report.
The Dutch midfielder was quoted by the Express as claiming that he would like to move to Barcelona but is concentrating on Ajax at the moment.
“I have already played a binding match for Ajax.
“I’m staying at Ajax.
“I think it will be a good year.”
The Dutch giants will be participating in the Champions League this season and will take on Benfica, Bayern Munich and AEK Athens.
The 21-year-old played 22 league games for the Dutch side last season and racked up seven assists. De Jong plays in the middle of the park and is known for his passing and dribbling ability, as per WhoScored.
The report from the Express adds that Spurs will continue tracking the starlet, who was voted the Jupiler League’s talent of the season for 2017.
The 21-year-old is valued at £40million, as per the Express and could be a quality player in the coming years.
