Spurs transfer news: Sporting president discusses Tottenham’s bid for Fernandes

Sporting president Frederico Varandas spoke to Portuguese outlet O Jogo regarding Tottenham’s offer for Bruno Fernandes.

The highly-rated midfielder was linked with Tottenham and a host of other clubs in the summer (h/t Sun), however, the 24-year-old remained with the Portuguese giants.

Varandas claimed that the only serious offer for Fernandes came from Tottenham, and the bid included a couple of clauses (h/t Sun):

“We had bids, lots of them, but the only serious bid was £40m from Tottenham, plus £18m for goals that were to win the Premier League and Champions.”

The Sporting president added that he turned the bid down the next day and explained to Fernandes as to why he turned it down.

Varandas added that Fernandes gave up “on his dreams” as he stayed with Sporting, but added that players were free to leave for the Premier League if the right offer came along:

“But I want players with ambition to go to the Premier League, who want to win the Champions League and want to go to Real Madrid.

“I want that, but Bruno also realised that the value they [Spurs] gave to Sporting was not a fair value.”

Tottenham had already spent big in the summer

Landing Fernandes would have provided us with more goals from the midfield but we also signed Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis.

Spurs signed Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon for a club-record fee (h/t BBC) and it would have been incredible had we made another huge signing in the summer.

It will be interesting to see if we return with an offer for Fernandes in the next transfer window.

Tottenham were able to keep hold of their stars this summer, however, the likes of Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen can all leave for free at the end of the campaign.
