Spurs have a talented set of individuals who clicked as a unit under the able leadership and brilliant tactics of their young manager, Mauricio Pochettino. Even the fans wouldn’t have thought of a title challenge in his second season at the club and his style of play has been ingrained by the squad well and is paying dividends. Though the dream of a league title wasn’t meant to be but a place in the Champions League after six long years will surely be soul soothing for the supporters.
The squad is inexperienced at the moment to play at the highest level and needs strengthening in numbers with some recognized players who can guide the young players in difficult situations. At this moment the rumours of offloading Eric Lamela to Inter Milan does not make sense as Spurs have to increase the squad strength but not lose one of their attacking outlets.
Lamela had a worst start to his career at the lane but has grown in confidence under Pochettino. It would have made sense if the club had decided to sell him last summer to recoup some of the huge fee that was paid to secure his services (£25.7m, plus . But after a decent season it just doesn’t add up as with increased pressure of next season, having depth is one of the most important feature of a successful side.
The targets like Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Franco Vazquez will add firepower to the side if they join the club but selling the player who is now looking like the real deal in his prime won’t do any good for the side. The trio of Eriksen, Alli and Lamela had linked up well throughout the season and even if the rumoured target Vazquez joins in, Lamela can become a real utility bench player for the Spurs.
Lamela has a tremendous workrate and his finishing has improved leaps and bounds this season. With 11 goals and 9 assists in the season gone by, the Argentine can improve on his tally and form a deadly partnership with Harry Kane. The rumours of selling him are not worth giving attention to and if the club decides to offload him, it will be a big mistake on the club’s part.
