Food For Thought – Here Are 3 Mistakes Tottenham Might Have Made This Summer

Tottenham

Tottenham might not have had the best of starts to this season but they still are unbeaten in the Premier League. Two draws and a win isn’t bad but Spurs and Mauricio Pochettino would have expected more from their three games.

The biggest achievement for Spurs this season would be to stay in the top four and have a great run in Europe. The Champions League is back at the Lane and it is a bit of a surprise as to why Pochettino did not sign more players.

Tottenham brought in just five players in the summer with ten going out of the club and a further seven leaving on loan. Spurs might have brought in quality with Victor Wanyama and Vincent Janssen but they made a number of mistakes as well.

Mauricio Pochettino will have a tough task on his hands and here are three mistakes he could have avoided in the summer.

Purchasing Moussa Sissoko

sissoko

The mind-boggling price paid by Tottenham should be the reason enough to say this was a mistake. Moussa Sissoko was relegated with Newcastle United and even though he had a good Euro 2016 campaign, £30 million should not have been paid for him.

The French midfielder was not the most consistent performer in the Premier League last time around either. Rafa Benitez must be chuffing at Spurs for purchasing a player who performs once in a while and isn’t really all that good.

Tottenham could have done so much better with the money spent on the 27-year old and this certainly seems like a lost cause.

Not purchasing a quality defender

Jan Vertonghen

This was another major mistake by Pochettino. Last season, Spurs struggled when Jan Vertonghen was out injured and the sheer number of games this season could lead to more problems at the back.

Spurs do not have a lot of cover this time around either and they even sent out Federico Fazio out on loan. The lack of a quality central defender will surely hurt Spurs due to the Champions League matches and other cup games. And it certainly is a surprise as to what the team were thinking not bringing in at least a player who can chip in with a game here and there.

Liverpool brought in Ragnar Klavan just for this case and Tottenham certainly dropped the ball on this one.

Not purchasing quality in attack

Lamela chadli

We aren’t speaking completely about Vincent Janssen. The Dutch striker does look good but the point was more about a lack of quality in the wide areas and also in an attacking midfielder’s role. Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, and Erik Lamela also need cover but Tottenham did not buy anyone of quality.

They even let go of Nacer Chadli, who could have done a decent job as a squad player. Tottenham bought in Georges-Kevin N’Koudou but the Frenchman could turn out to be another Son Heung Min or Clinton N’Jie.

For all the good done by Tottenham by bringing in Wanyama, they have been done a number of rather confusing things in the window. Spurs might still end up doing well but a lot of questions should be asked about their transfer policy so that the same mistakes aren’t made next time around.
