If we are to ask anyone who the best right-back in the Premier League is. The simple answer to that would be Kyle Walker. You do not have to look anywhere else to be honest, as the Tottenham man has been on fire for the last couple of years
The 26-year-old is set to sign a new contract at Spurs and it is the least the London club can do to ensure they keep one of the best right-backs in the country. Walker might not be the most well-known defender but if he keeps on performing at this level, the Englishman could end up with a move to a bigger club outside the country.
Raising the bar for other full-backs in the league
In the last game against Stoke City, Walker was phenomenal. The 26-year-old Englishman had a rating of 7.57 from Whoscored.com and also provided an assist. Walker also was adjudged the man-of-the-match when playing against Everton, where he bagged an assist as well.
The defender also had 63 touches of the ball in the entire game (against Stoke). Tottenham managed 700 touches in total, and the Englishman was at the heart of all the good attacking work against the Potters.
Luke Shaw and Nathaniel Clyne have been two players that have started the season really well for Manchester United and Liverpool respectively but Walker seems to be the one that has certainly outdone the duo in a few departments.
Taking the help of Sqauwka.com, the Spurs man is one of the players that take risks with a longer pass length. Walker comes up with an average pass length of 23 metres so far this season while the likes of Clyne and Shaw have come up with 17.5 metres and 15.25 metres so far this season.
The defender also has the best take-on percentage amongst the trio of English players mentioned. Walker comes in with a 75% success rate when taking on other players while Shaw and Clyne come in with 55.56% and 50% respectively.
In fact, Walker is even better in the air than on the ground with a success rate in aerial duels of 89%. Shaw is the closest to him with this regards as he has a success rate of 67% and Clyne is nowhere close with just 12%. Even with clearances Walker tops the trio with 4.55 clearances in a game compared to 2.75 for Clyne and 3.86 for Shaw.
The English defender is certainly off to a flyer this season and it is no surprise that Tottenham are trying to nail him down to a long-term contract fast. Walker might not have been the player on everyone’s lips at the start of the season but his performances are doing all the talking. This could be the season that we call as the “Walker season” if he continues in this vein of form.
