With Son Heung-min doing exceptionally well in the absence of Harry Kane, there have been a lot of pressure on Vincent Janssen to perform. The Dutch international was brought to the club from AZ Alkmaar for £17 million but is yet to score in the Premier League.
Many expected Janssen to reduce the goal scoring pressure on Harry Kane this season. But the Dutchman has not looked sharp in front of goal. He does have a goal to his name but that came in a penalty during an EFL Cup match.
Janssen’s Dutch colleague, Bas Dost, was confident in the ability of the 22-year-old. Dost was certain that Janssen would do well but he needs time to perform. The Dutchman told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf:
“All that rubbish about Vincent, give that boy some time.
“He’s a good scorer and is a great player for the Dutch national team.
“But I also know that if you do not score, you are under pressure, that’s part of this job.”
A great scoring record for Janssen
If we are to look at Janssen’s scoring record, it certainly makes for great reading. The 22-year-old scored 31 goals in 49 games for Alkmaar last season. In fact, the Dutch striker has scored 64 goals in 130 games and that too was after a slow start with Almere City in the Eerste Divisie.
Janssen does have a history of slow starts. It took him eight games to find the back of the net for Alkmaar but post that he was on fire, scoring goals for fun. The 22-year-old also has three goals from seven games for the Dutch national side and should only score more with games under his belt.
What could be working against him at the moment is playing in a new country for a new team. There are a lot of expectations on the Tottenham side and the pressure certainly is getting to Janssen. That coupled with Kane’s injury has brought the spotlight on the youngster.
Tottenham fans still should not worry about the goal drought. Spurs are playing some great football and with the rising Son (Heung-min) leading the line, there won’t be a lot of eyes prying on Janssen. He should just stay calm and let Mauricio Pochettino help him ease into the side. The Spurs manager has been able to get the best out of many players and Janssen could be the next one who starts scoring for fun.
