After a stellar last season where Tottenham finished 3rd on the table, expectations were high from Pochettino and his men and they haven’t disappointed one bit. With 8 matches played till now, Tottenham remains the only unbeaten team in the league. Prior to the international break, Tottenham secured a tremendous victory against League leaders Manchester City at White Hart Lane. Although the North London outfit have the added pressure of the Champions League, they have managed to produce consistent performances week in week out. The fact that Tottenham have a settled group of players hugely helps the team’s stability. Here we look at the top five passers in the Tottenham team.
Victor Wanyama
The summer signing has settled in well at the White Hart Lane. His energy and strength in the middle is critical in providing freedom to the likes of Alli and Kane to flourish up front. The former Southampton player has already made more than 350 successful passes at an accuracy rate of 89%. Wanayama is facing stiff competition from Dembele but his excellent performances have the kept Belgian out till now.
Jan Vertonghen
A rock at the back for Tottenham, since moving to North London in 2012, the Belgian has gone on to become one of the best defenders in the league. His solid partnership with fellow compatriot, Alderweireld, is the main reason why Tottenham have been so tight at the back. Vertonghen is also a leader at the back, keeping everyone focussed. If Tottenham are to do well this season, they will need him to be at the top of his game and injury free. Talking about the stat, the towering Belgian has averaged a passing accuracy of 85% and has completed 342 passes up until now.
Toby Alderweireld
It would be fair to say that Tottenham looks a much weaker defensive unit when Alderweireld isn’t in it rather than Vertonghen. The Tottenham defender has made a total of 327 successful passes till now with an accuracy rate of 83%. Alderweireld moved to Tottenham only last season but has quickly become the first name on the teamsheet when fit.
Christian Eriksen
The Danish international is the heart of the Tottenham team. It is with his vision and trickery that Spurs manage to open opposition defences with such ease. He might not have the highest number of successful passes in the team but it is not surprising to see him have the most number of key passes in the top five. The 24-year-old moved with huge expectations on his back and fortunately for the Spurs fans he hasn’t disappointed one bit.
Kyle Walker
Another Tottenham rock in this list. There are few players in this world who are faster than the 26-year-old. Walker already has two assists to his name and what is most impressive about his attacking play is his ability to ping pinpoint balls upfront for the runners. The defender did struggle initially to settle in but since then has made the full-back spot his own.
