Tottenham Duo End Transfer Speculations As They Accept New Deals To Stay At White Hart Lane

Harry Kane celebrates after scoring has scored four goals in four games since his return from injury

After weeks of speculation, Tottenham – through their official website  – have confirmed that both Jan Vertonghen and Harry Kane have signed new contacts. The former has signed a three-year contract to extend his stay with Spurs until 2019, while Kane has signed a new deal until the summer of 2022.

Vertonghen had been in discussions with Spurs for several months in order to extend the contract, which was to expire soon. Even though the Belgian international claimed that the negotiations were progressing smoothly, the lack of a confirmation was starting to become a major source of worry. The concerns were even bigger in the case of Harry Kane, who is probably the biggest star of the club. Pochettino said after the confirmation of Kane’s contract:

“It’s important for us, for the club. It’s great news. We are very happy because he is showing his commitment to the club.

“It’s important for the player to be calm in their mind and focus on playing and improving every day. When they are involved in the negotiations, it can affect the player. I’m not saying affected Harry, but the deal is done and he can focus on training and improving and scoring goals.”

Kane only signed a new five-year contract back in February, but negotiations started once again as soon as the club brought in Mousa Sissoko for a club recordfee. The midfielder quickly became the highest paid player at the club earning £95,000 per week, while Kane was only on around £65,000 per week. The disparity in the wages coupled with the transfer interest from clubs like Manchester United made Kane’s new contract an absolute priority.

However, it was rumoured a few weeks ago that chairman Daniel Levy was not prepared to be held to ransom. Spurs appeared to have put contract negotiations on hold until the end of the season. It would have left Vertonghen with just 12 months left on his deal.

Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen has comitted his future to the club

Since joining from Ajax in 2012, the Belgian has been a consistent performer for the London outfit. He has already made 179 appearances for the club during this period. Since the arrival of his international compatriot Toby Alderweireld, Vertonghen has managed to take an even bigger influence in the defensive proceedings. More than the club, Vertonghen was the first to admit relief at being able to sign this new contract. He said:

“It’s a big relief. I’m very happy to be here, the future look great so I’m very happy to be a part of it.

“This is an unbelievable group of guys and talent and I feel privileged to be a part of that.”

Kane finished last season as the club’s top scorer with 25 goals. At just 23 years of age, he is seen as the future of Spurs. Since his return from a long term injury only recently, Kane has scored four goals in his last four appearances.

Spurs are in a great period and the club have been taking advantage of the situation by tying a number of promising young players to long-term deals. Dele Alli, Kyle Walker, Christian Eriksen, Eric Dier, and Danny Rose have all put the pen to paper since the start of the campaign.
