Tottenham captain and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris recently announced his decision to postpone any contract talks to the end of the season. It comes as a major disappointment for Spurs even though the club have been able to pay down a number of top players like Harry Kane and Jan Vertonghen on new contracts this season. Lloris and Kane were seen as the contract rebels not too long ago. Both players were reportedly unhappy with aspects like wages and the importance being given the club in terms of the contract.
Despite being one of the club’s best players, Kane was earning significantly less than summer signing Mousa Sissoko. The French international signed a contract worth around £95,000 per week after his summer move from Newcastle. This was significantly higher than the £65,000 per week being paid to Harry Kane despite the striker finishing as the league’s top goal scorer last season. Spurs were able to come to an agreement with the 23-year-old forward, but the same cannot be said of Lloris.
Regarded in the same league as David de Gea and Thibaut Courtois, Lloris has been instrumental in the success achieved by Tottenham in the last four years. However, his contract is coming to an end in the summer of 2019 and there has been no urgency from Tottenham in order to renew this deal. Lloris is reported to be upset with the situation so much so that he has postpone any contract talks until the end of the season.
Spurs now extremely concerned about contract situation surrounding the 29-year-old goalkeeper, who will be subject to interest from the top clubs across the world should he decide to leave White Hart Lane that they are prepared to go the extreme step of looking at replacements.
There is no shortage of top English goalkeepers available in the market with Manchester City’s Joe Hart being branded as an unwanted man at the Etihad stadium. The England goalkeeper is currently on loan at Italian club Torino and he is widely expected to return to English football in the summer. Spurs, though, are also looking at a much younger alternative with Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford top of the list, reports Express Sport.
Pickford has been in amazing form for Sunderland despite the club struggling in the relegation zone. They clearly seem to be coming well in the last few weeks after managing three wins in the last four matches. It has helped the club rise to within a point of going clear of the drop zone. It has been a remarkable rise largely made possible because of Pickford. If Sunderland are to let him go, Spurs will have to pay an astronomical sum so as to secure this highly rated 22-year-old.
