Dele Alli has been one of the greatest stories in the Tottenham transfer ins and outs over the last decade. A relative unknown a few years ago, Alli was brought in by Spurs for around £5 million from MK Dons. He has gone from a player with a potential to someone who can make a major impact at international level. Despite being only 20, Alli has already made 15 appearances for the England national team. His progress has been so tremendous that it is unsurprising to know about transfer interest from other clubs.
Paris St Germain have been mooted as a potential destination for the youngster with the French club reportedly ready to be around £50 million for his services. It is a transfer rumour that has not gone unnoticed. Alli, though, has his feet firmly on the ground and has said that he has no intention of leaving Spurs right now considering that he signed a new contract only in September. Talking to Sky Sports, he said:
“It’s all just rumours to be honest with you.
“I have just signed a new contract with Tottenham, I am happy here. I couldn’t think of a better place to be at my age.
“It has been a great year for me, I have had a lot of success in my career so far but I have got to keep improving, keep getting better, and make sure 2017 is even better.”
A move to PSG would make Alli one of the youngest English players to cross the Channel for bigger things. Players like Gareth Bale and David Beckham are probably regarded as the most successful British exports, but they have been able to achieve this success only after having moved across after gaining significant experience. Alli is tied to Spurs until the summer of 2022. His new contract does not make him one of the highest earners in the Premier League. Due to Tottenham’s strict wage policy, even Harry Kane, who signed a new contract, does not receive more than £100,000 per week.
This policy from Spurs has been heavily criticised considering that clubs are now increasingly ready to offer in excess of £200,000 per week in order to keep the star players. Alli may have resisted any attempts from PSG for the time being, but one can be confident that there will continue to be transfer rumours surrounding the midfielder as he continues to become even better.
Tottenham’s ability to promote youngsters from the ranks has been a major part of their success. Gareth Bale was brought into the club for a similar transfer fee and was later sold on to Real Madrid for a then-world record fee of £85 million. Considering the progress Alli has made in the last year and half, it is quite possible that the midfielder will soon be regarded as one of the world’s best if he manages to continue the progress at the same pace.
Just like the rest of the Tottenham players, Alli went through a barren spell during the months of October and November. However, he has now returned to form with a goal and an assist in the last four matches.
