Tottenham have been linked with a move for Real Madrid midfielder Isco throughout the last few months. Isco only has just over 18 months left on his contract, and he is thought to have been extremely disappointed not to be part of Zinedine Zidane’s starting line-up for a number of weeks. As one of the highly talented members of the Madrid squad, the 24-year-old was never going to stay happy on the bench for a long. Spurs emerged as a potential alternative for the player along with the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea also keeping tabs on the situation.
In recent weeks, though, reports emerged that the player was about to sign a new contract with the Spanish outfit. This remarkable turnaround was created as a result of Isco’s improved form, injury situation, and the upcoming transfer ban for Real Madrid. The Spanish outfit are set to face this transfer embargo for up to 2 transfer windows, which will prevent the club signing any players for the best part of 2017. As a result, Madrid have been on a contract extending spree in the last few weeks.
Top players like Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Luka Modric have extended their contracts with Madrid. Isco was the next in line to receive a new deal, but with the season fast approaching the mid-season break in Spain, there has been no official confirmation of the contract. It is understood that Isco is not happy with the assurances being provided by Madrid with regard to a first-team spot. Towards the end of October, the midfielder was in sparkling form after scoring goals against the likes of Real Betis.
Those goals, however, have dried up and Isco has not scored for Madrid since the middle of October. Even the midfielder is not expected to be part of the names who must score in order to retain their place in the squad, the heavy competition in the Madrid squad is starting to threaten his place. His dip in form has coincided with the fact that he has not been able to complete 90 minutes of action since the 4-1 win over Deportivo Alaves towards the end of October.
Isco’s dad recently claimed that his son should be thinking about the move from Madrid in order to improve his career.
He told talkSPORT: “If I’ve still only made a few appearances by the end of the season, I’ll look elsewhere.
“At 24 years of age I have to right to better myself.”
A number of players from Spanish football like Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez have been doing well in the Premier League of late. Even though Spurs have not been able to complete a major signing in the last few years, the club has come in leaps and bounds since the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino in 2014.
The Argentine manager has made Spurs into a title contender and the club can now offer Champions League football to the likes of Isco and other top transfer targets.
