Tottenham Could Be Handed Transfer Boost To Complete A Deal That Has Been Mauricio Pochettino’s Regret

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino recently spoke about the regret about not having Gylfi Sigurdsson in the team. The Argentine boss saw the attacking midfielder being sold just a few days after he came to the club in 2014. Sigurdsson moved to Swansea in a £10 million deal and has been a major positive for the club through their difficult times. However, the club’s relegation threat coupled with their interest in Spurs midfielder Tom Carroll is likely to open a chance for Sigurdsson to come back to White Hart Lane.

ESPN quoted that Swansea manager Bob Bradley recently confirmed that he would like to bring in Carroll in the January transfer window. Unable to get much of a look into the first team setup, the 24-year-old midfielder is likely to be sold by Spurs. The likes of Harry Winks have been able to move ahead of him in the pecking order. Carroll is valued at around £5 million, but it appears that Swansea may be interested in the possibility of a swap deal involving Sigurdsson too. The league’s 18th placed club could benefit from the additional cash generated from the sale of Sigurdsson.

Sigurdsson has been extremely potent going forward and he has contributed 10 out of the 20 goals scored by the club. However, Swansea are becoming increasingly aware that it would be extremely difficult to hold on to the Icelandic international with the threat of relegation becoming a real factor at the Liberty stadium. A player of Sigurdsson’s quality is unlikely to be keen on playing in the Championship at 28 years of age. Spurs would offer him a nice alternative, while Swansea would also benefit from additional cash coupled with Carroll their squad.

Prior to the meeting with Swansea a few weeks ago, Pochettino said that he was never given the opportunity to take a good look at Sigurdsson since the player was sold just a few days after his arrival at the club. Now, though, he regrets that the Icelandic international is not part of the Spurs set up since he would be able to provide much more going forward.

“I think after he moved to Swansea and we saw his development at Swansea, he was a perfect player for us,” Pochettino said. “But it was a club decision and his decision to move to Swansea and find another way. Every time we meet him and see him, he shows his quality – not only as a player but like a man. All the people here talk very highly about him. It’s a shame but sometimes in football you never know what will happen. There are no regrets.”

Dele Alli has been the best attacking midfielders since the start of the campaign, while Christian Eriksen is coming to form over the last few weeks. However, rest of the attacking midfielders have not been able to deliver and Spurs may be looking to fill this gap with the addition of Sigurdsson.

It is highly likely that Sigurdsson will cost substantially more than the £10 million paid by Swansea two years ago even though he is 28 years old. With January looming closer, any interest from Spurs will become apparent in the next week or two.
