Mauricio Pochettino claims that Tottenham players are starting to show a lot of trust in the club’s ongoing project and this explains the contract signing spree for Spurs in the last few months. Since the start of the campaign, a number of players like Harry Kane, Jan Vertonghen, Christian Eriksen, Kyle Walker, and Danny Rose have put pen to the paper. Most recently, Michel Vorm and Hugo Lloris also extended their contracts with Spurs. As much as 10 players have committed their long-term futures to the club in the last six months alone.
After having finished third in the Premier League last season with a majority of these players, it is not surprising that Spurs are looking to retain the core of the squad as they build towards the future. Pochettino when asked about Tottenham’s success in completing deals while Arsenal have been struggling to do the same, said as reported by Hertfordshire Mercury:
“Maybe you can find the answer on this pitch. All the players are talking about the project, all are talking about the future, all are talking about being happy here.”
“In the way they try to play they are happy. They agree with our philosophy. That is the answer. The players are happy to be here, for different reasons. Tottenham can provide the facilities, in one year and a half a new stadium. The answer is easier to find why.”
The club are in the process of building a brand-new 60,000 seater stadium, which is expected to vastly improve the club’s financial revenues. Moving into this stadium will allow Spurs to compete with the traditional top-flight clubs in terms of every aspect from the transfer market to match day revenues.
The situation at Tottenham is a complete opposite to the ones experienced by rivals Arsenal. The players like Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez are about to go out of contract in less than two years. The club has been unable to agree terms with the players amidst interest from China and other top clubs. Even in the summer, players like Santa Cazorla and Per Mertesacker are out of contract and Arsenal are yet to agree terms with these players. Olivier Giroud, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kieran Gibbs, Carl Jenkinson, and Aaron Ramsey are the other players whose contract will be expiring in the summer of 2018.
Pochettino has clearly taken a swipe at the club’s main rivals by claiming that the players signing onto new deals show that they are committed, happy, and trust of the long-term objective of the club.
A major reason for the trust has been the presence of Pochettino, who has been able to resist the temptation to join the likes of Manchester United in order to stay at White Hart Lane. The manager has had his problems with dealing two match days in a week, but there are signs that Spurs are slowly finding a perfect schedule that manages their packed fixtures.
A big test for the club would be the upcoming run of matches that includes games against Southampton, Watford, and Chelsea within the next fortnight. Two of those three games are away from home making the challenge even tougher. Spurs are just one point behind Arsenal, who occupy the final top four place.
