Tottenham are keen on signing Paris St Germain forward Jean-Kevin Augustin, as per the reports from Bleacherreport. The 19-year-old is one of the top-rated forwards in French football, but he has been unable to get much game time due to the presence of Edinson Cavani. Now, it is rumoured that PSG are not only looking to continue with Cavani but they are also keen on adding a backup. This would leave Augustin starved of first-team opportunities. Even though PSG have not been a dominant force in the French league this season, manager Unai Emery has not trusted Augustin much. The 19-year-old has made 10 appearances in the league but only one of them has been from the start.
His return of one goal in 191 minutes of action certainly does not bode well to get ahead of Cavani in the pecking order. As a result, Augustin may have to look elsewhere for first team opportunities. It appears that he has fixed his eyes upon a move to England with Tottenham showing a lot of interest. Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino recently claimed that striker Vincent Janssen needs a lot of time to settle in English football, but it is thought that the manager is already looking at options to replace the Dutch striker.
The lack of a proper backup to Harry Kane could threaten to spoil the club’s title hopes this season. When the England striker was unavailable for almost 2 months, Janssen was used in his place and he was a major disappointment. Even though he has been at Tottenham for the last six months, the 22-year-old is yet to score a goal from open play. With his confidence at the own levels, it looks highly unlikely that Janssen may get the break that he would like. A potential loan move away from North London may be the option for the striker. Augustin has been lined up as a replacement.
One of the important attributes is that the striker only has just under 18 months left on his contract, which expires in June 2018. As a result, PSG may be willing to let the player leave for substantially lower than his market value of around € 5 million. Spurs have had more success at signing players for this transfer fee rather than the extravagant names like Vincent Janssen, who cost the club £17 million from Dutch outfit Ajax in the summer. Tottenham, though, are not the only club interested in Augustin, as they would face competition from Borussia Dortmund.
A few years ago, Tottenham would have probably lost out to the German outfit, who had a great chance of winning the title. Now, Spurs can also offer Champions League football and a tilt at the title.
