Harry Kane has expressed his desire to take up the heavy armband of Spurs’ captaincy if Hugo Lloris leaves the club in the future. So far, he has done it thrice but has insisted he has no problems in taking up captaincy on a permanent basis.
Talking to ESPN, Kane opened up about his future and insisted that money does not interest him and would someday love to take up England captaincy as well.
“Hopefully Hugo is here as long as possible and he’ll be the captain,” Kane told ESPN. “But if he goes to another club or is injured, that’s a role that I’d love to take up. Everyone knows how I feel about Spurs and the connection I have with the fans. I see myself as a leader and we have a lot of leaders on the field. So why not? I’d love to be captain of Tottenham and hopefully one day England as well.”
Kane joined Tottenham in 2004 as a young boy, and signed a professional contract with the club in 2010 after scoring an impressive 18 goals in 22 appearances in 2008/09 for the U-18s. He hasn’t looked back since, scoring an astonishing 80 goals in 149 appearances for the Lilywhites. The fact that he is only 23 years old, turns things in his favour. Kane has been remarkably consistent for Spurs since 2014/15 season when he registered 31 goals in all competitions and 28 goals the following season, with 16 this current campaign so far in 22 games.
He also gave glowing words about his fellow countryman, Dele Alli and said that his ‘unbelievable’ teammate can go on to become one of the world’s best.
Kane said about Alli, “He’s got so many great attributes, he scores goals, he assists goals, he’s got great skills. He’s his own player. He’s got amazing potential.” This shows the amount of belief the striker has on his fellow teammate which is a good thing, now that he is interested in leading Tottenham on the pitch.
With Lloris being linked with a move away from Spurs in the summer, this adds further speculation on the French shot stopper’s future, with Real Madrid being linked with him.
Given his consistency for Spurs, Kane does look like a logical choice for the captain’s role. The fact that he has been Tottenham through and through would be ideal as well for the club’s future and image. However, with Lloris having signed a long term contract with the club till 2022, the English striker might have to wait for his wish to be fulfilled.
