Tottenham endured a disappointing Champions League campaign after gathering only 7 points from 6 games in the group stages. They finished 3rd in their group and were relegated to Europa League. But now they have the chance to put things in perspective, as they get ready for Europa League knockout phase.
Spurs have 3 of their players who are still nursing their injuries. Jan Vertonghen and Danny Rose are sure to sit this one out. Kevin Nkodou is still a doubt, as he hasn’t completely recovered from his injury as well.
It is possible that Pochettino may opt for a strong starting XI as it is a great chance for Tottenham to win a trophy. With the league title chase all but over, it would be nice for Spurs to go all out for Europa League, where they have a realistic chance of winning.
Here’s a prediction of the possible Spurs XI that may take the field.
Goalkeeper: Hugo Lloris
Lloris has been an irremovable cog in the Tottenham team and the club captain is a sure starter for Spurs. There is no doubt with this one.
Defence: Kyle Walker; Eric Dier; Toby Alderweireld; Ben Davies
It will be a direct battle Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker for the right-back spot. Trippier usually got the nod in the Champions League games. However, Walker will most likely start the game.
Central Midfield: Harry Winks; Victor Wanyama
Harry Winks recently signed a new contract with the club and is a player who has the confidence of his manager. He may get his deserved start, alongside new signing Victor Wanyama, who has been rock solid all season.
Attacking Midfield: Dele Alli
The young England International is an extraordinary asset to have and is one of the finest English talents. He is a goal scoring threat and is very important to the build-up play as well. Alli is almost a certainty to start the game.
The Wings: Son Heung-Min; Christian Eriksen
Son and Eriksen are the star turns of the Spurs team and are brilliant on the pitch. Eriksen has brought the much-needed character that Tottenham have lacked badly in the past. They look at ease while attacking when these two players are on the pitch.
Striker: Harry Kane
Harry Kane is simply superb and is vital for Tottenham. Maybe he needs to be kept fresh but the fact that Janssen has been in poor form this season might prompt Pochettino to risk playing the Englishman. Use Janssen as a substitute when leading the game comfortably maybe?
