Tottenham Hotspur have received a massive boost ahead of their FA cup game against Fulham, with the club all set to welcome their tall centre-half back as he returns to full training. Though fans would have loved to see him for the Europa League clash, Pochettino has confirmed that the defender will feature in the weekend’s FA cup tie.
Vertonghen could appear against Fulham in FA cup match this weekend and the fans were in joy after the news broke out. The London Evening Standard quoted Pochettino as saying,
“Jan Vertonghen is very well and maybe Sunday he’ll be ready to make the starting XI or be on the bench”
Spurs have conceded 7 goals in Vertonghen’s absence after having the second-best defence in the league, with 11 clean sheets and only 18 goals conceded overall.
Vertonghen joined Tottenham in the 2011/12 season and has since been a vital player for the North London club. He will forever be remembered for his first premier league goal, which was against Manchester United and Spurs won 3-2.
In his 5th season at White Hart Lane, Vertonghen has played 138 games so far and has 7 goals to his name and in numerous clean sheets.
Vertonghen’s return is sure to boost the team’s confidence and his presence will be important too when Spurs consider their chances of winning a domestic trophy this year. He will be a necessity at the back and will continue to solidify the Tottenham defence.
The Belgian defender moved to North London from Ajax and is the third captain of the team behind Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane.
It is a timely welcome, considering the position that Spurs are in the Premier League table, 10 points behind leaders Chelsea. His return surely does come as a timely boost and will be a huge morale booster for the rest of the squad.
The world of Twitter erupted after the news was announced that he would be available for Sunday’s game.
