Tottenham have reportedly been offered Atletico Madrid forward Kevin Gameiro, who joined Diego Simeone’s team only in the summer. Gameiro was one of the big-money moves made by Atletico Madrid in the summer as they look to strengthen the team in order to prepare for a challenge in the Champions League and domestic fronts. Yet, the £35 million (via Daily Mirror) acquisition has struggled since making the move to the Vicente Calderon.
Vincent Janssen has also struggled since making the move from Dutch football in the summer. However, he was substantially less expensive at £17 million, although Gameiro has been half decent in the first half of the campaign. The 29-year-old has managed to score 9 league goals in 15 starts, although 7 more appearances have been from the bench. Gameiro has also contributed five assists. It has not been the best of seasons for Atletico Madrid going forward. Even Antoine Griezmann has struggled to make a major impact. However, it is surprising that Diego Simeone is taking the decision to sell the player after just six months.
Atletico are aware that Tottenham place a lot of burden on the striker Harry Kane in order to come up with the goals. Janssen was signed in the summer purely to ease the burden on the 23-year-old England striker. However, his inability to even score from open play in the first half of the season has led0 to Tottenham already looking at alternatives in the summer. Even though the club are in a great position with regard to the Premier league – 10 points behind leaders Chelsea, manager Mauricio Pochettino is concerned about the club’s ability to sustain the form in the second half of the season – especially with the Europa League and FA Cup games in between.
Only three players have managed to score more than 10 goals in the Tottenham squad. The heavy reliance on Harry Kane and Dele Alli already showed its signs in the 1-0 defeat against Gent in the first leg of the Europa League last 32 round.
A well-travelled forward, Gameiro began his professional career with the Strasbourg in 2005. He moved to Lorient where he spent three years before being noticed by Paris St Germain. However, the move to the French capital in 2011 did not prove to be a successful outcome and this led to the quick departure to Sevilla in 2013. After scoring 39 goals in 92 league appearances, Atletico Madrid paid this extravagant fee in order to bring him to the Vicente Calderon.
Would Gameiro be a good signing if he arrives in the summer?
