Toby Alderweireld is close to signing a contract extension with Tottenham, according to reports from Daily Mail and the Twitterati reacted in a hilarious way to the news about the Spurs star.

He is believed to be on the verge of signing a £75,000-a-week contract and has been a vital figure at the back for Tottenham.

Alderweireld signing his new contract would mean that the £25 million release clause in his current contract, which would be available for activation in 2019 if Tottenham choose to exercise a one-year extension of his contract that would see him stay in London until 2020.

Spurs fans have taken the Belgium international to their hearts and are universally over the moon at the prospect of him committing his long-term future to the club.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to the news.

Alderweireld was substituted during Tottenham’s win over Stoke on Sunday, but Mauricio Pochettino insisted it was purely precautionary amid fears of injury. He will certainly be available for Tottenham’s game against Everton, as the manager suggested that both Alderweireld and Vertonghen have enough time to recover for the team’s next game.

Now that a new deal is being discussed, the release clause in the current contract would be removed and this means that Tottenham need not worry about losing their star defender for a low price.

Toby Alderweireld has been brilliant for Tottenham this season and Spurs fans for sure are waiting eagerly for the announcement of his contract extension with the club.
