Tottenham defender Ben Davies appeared to be on the verge of leaving Tottenham during the January transfer window. The Welsh international had been starved of first-team opportunities due to the presence of Danny Rose in front of him. The England left back was always going to be the first choice given the attacking threat that he provides in Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham team. Davies was increasingly linked with a move to Swansea during the January transfer window. Crystal Palace also came in with an offer for the player, as Sam Allardyce looked like being on the verge of missing out on Sunderland defender Patrick van Aanholt.

In an incredible turn of events, Davies has once again found himself favoured at White Hart Lane. Danny Rose suffered an injury in the 0-0 draw with Sunderland towards the end of January. This has kept him out of the first-team action even until now. Davies has been able to capitalise on the situation with some decent performances. The 23-year-old provided an assist during the 3-2 win over Everton on Sunday. Now, it seems that Davies is set to be rewarded for his excellent performances with a new contract. Davies is reportedly set to sign a £12 million deal with Spurs – spread over four years.
Davies will now be earning around £60,000 per week if he signs on the dotted line. In doing so, he will also join the likes of Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, and Kyle Walker. All these players have signed new contracts with Spurs – a sign of the changing times at White Hart Lane. Gone are the days when the club used to struggle when it comes to retaining the best players. Now with Champions League football available at White Hart Lane, the club are finding it easier to persuade players to agree to new contracts. The new contract for Davies is extremely important considering that the player’s existing deal runs out in the summer of 2019.
Davies signed his existing contract with Spurs when he had joined from Swansea back in 2014 for around £10 million. If Spurs had decided to sell Davies to Crystal Palace in the January transfer window, they would have received a similar fee for the Welsh international. Davies appeared to be more concerned about his international future as a result of constantly being on the bench. Now, his recent run of games in the first team is sure to make him a feature in the upcoming Wales squad for the two international games. Since making his debut in 2012, Davies has featured in 28 games for the national team.
