Mateo Kovacic, one of Real Madrid’s brightest players is being linked with a move to the Premier League and Tottenham seem to be the club that wants to sign the 22-year-old. Kovacic hasn’t been able to cement his place in the Spanish capital and the Mirror now claims that the London club are preparing a bid for the midfielder.
Kovacic was one of the rising stars at Inter Milan a couple of years ago and Real Madrid were able to sign the much-wanted Croatian in a deal which kept him at the club for six years. Things haven’t gone as planned for Kovacic as he has had to play a bit-part role at the club and is still seen as a squad player.
The report claims that Kovacic has a buy-out clause of around £21.8 million, however, Madrid are willing to listen to even lower offers to the tune of £17.5 million. That does put Tottenham in a bit of an advantage as they have Daniel Levy on their side and he would be looking to bring that valuation down a bit more.
Kovacic would provide a lot of competition to the likes of Mousa Dembele in the deep playmaking position but he can push up forward and play in a more attacking role as well. The Croatian has played 18 La Liga games for the Spanish giants but has only come up with one goal and a couple of assists.
The 22-year-old does have a lot of time on his hands and his development would certainly be better under Mauricio Pochettino. The manager knows how to get the best out of his players, though there still are a few questions about the players he brings in from other clubs.
Moussa Sissoko, Vincent Janssen and even Kevin Wimmer haven’t been the best signings and there could be questions about Kovacic as well. Fortunately for Tottenham, Kovacic wouldn’t be the most expensive player out there and with the clubs already having done some great business for Gareth Bale and Luka Modric, this deal could be done in the summer.
Kovacic certainly would be a great addition to the side and who knows, he could turn out to be an astute signing by Pochettino.
