Tottenham In Driving Seat Ahead Of Arsenal To Complete Deal For Bundesliga Midfielder

published :

Tottenham are set to battle Arsenal for one of Germany’s great young talents. Leon Goretzka has been a star for Schalke this season and it is no surprise that a number of clubs are after the signing of the 22-year-old midfielder.

Spurs, however, seem to be in the lead over their London rivals according to reports from Calciomercato and that isn’t a surprise given the turmoil that the Gunners are having to deal with. While Arsenal dilly-dally Tottenham’s interest could be enough to help them sign another rising star from the Bundesliga.

Fans will remember how Lewis Holtby was a hit and miss but will expect Mauricio Pochettino to do his homework before he signs another young talent. The problem with the signing could be the fact that Tottenham have a number of midfielders, attacking ones too, and Goretzka does fall under that category.

The 22-year-old can even play out wide but it would be tough seeing him displace the likes of Son Heung-Min, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen from the first team. The German could be a great option for the side from the bench and could even turn out to be a better signing than some of the other players in the side.

Tottenham seem to be in the running for a number of players as they have been linked with a move for Ross Barkley as well. The Everton star was rumoured to be on the wish list of Pochettino in the winter window but that deal didn’t come to fruition.

Goretzka though has scored four times in the Bundesliga this season having played 22 games. He has also chipped in with a couple of goals in the Europa League and he would hope that his side can pick up that trophy come the end of the season.

Arsenal have had the edge over Spurs when it comes to signing German players in the past with Shkodran Mustafi, Per Mertesacker and Mesut Ozil joining the Gunners. But Tottenham are in a better position at the moment and could do with the talents of Goretzka. The only issue would be the transfer value, which is something that Daniel Levy can deal with well.
