Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a £30million move for Bayern Munich winger Douglas Costa. According to the Mirror, Spurs are interested in the Brazilian attacker and could make a move in the summer.
The Bayern winger has found his game time cut short this season and has appeared 31 times, with a total of 1785 minutes on the pitch. This has reportedly led to him considering his options in the summer and now Tottenham have emerged as potential suitors.
Tottenham have long been linked with wingers as the has struggled for quality on the flanks. Somehow, it hasn’t affected the flow of goals and we have survived all the odds to sustain a strong title challenge. Spurs are set to take on Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final this weekend and the result would virtually decide the league winner as well.
Costa has clashed with his own club over his current contract, which expires in 2020. In February Bayern president Uli Hoeness warned Costa that his “desperate attempts” to get an improved deal would not work.
Hoeness said at the time: “That doesn’t work with us. He can try 10 more times. He is certainly not a hardship case.”
Summer signing Moussa Sissoko has not impressed since arriving and has been a failure. Erik Lamela’s injury didn’t help Tottenham’s case either.
But now, the chase for Costa seems to be real. The Brazilian is undoubtedly a high-quality player. Costa arrived at the Allianz Arena in the summer of 2015 and hasn’t looked back since then. He has been an important player for the Bavarians but hasn’t really made the wing his own. Ribery’s absence helped him get some time on the pitch but this season, it seems like Costa has struggled for time.
Costa has since responded by admitting he is considering his options.
He said: “I cannot comment on names, there are contacts with teams from England, Spain and also France. But we respect Bayern. First we want to get together with them and look at what they think of it, and then we make a decision. I am still under contract with FC Bayern until 2020, I have three more years. Of course, football is a business, Bayern simply has to accept a bid and the others pay what they have to pay.”
The Brazilian would actually benefit by joining Tottenham as the club are genuinely making progress and are on their way to becoming one of Europe’s elite.
Costa’s pace and trickery are unmatched and the fullbacks in Premier League would find him difficult to handle. Signing him would show Tottenham’s intent and his experience in the Champions League would be a huge advantage too. Tottenham have struggled in European competitions and a player like Douglas would aid their European adventure too.
Do you think Tottenham will be able to lure Douglas Costa away from Bayern Munich?
