Tottenham are set to offer an escape route for another Newcastle player. Florian Thauvin didn’t have the greatest of times since he joined the Magpies in 2015 and was loaned out to Marseille pretty quickly.
The Chronicle Live reports that the 24-year-old is a realistic target for Mauricio Pochettino, especially after the 24-year-old has found form playing for the Ligue 1 side. Thauvin has scored 12 goals this season for the French club and has also chipped in with nine assists.
Tottenham would have to really spend big if they do want to sign the player up as Marseille have an option to make the current loan deal permanent. It would also take some convincing from Daniel Levy and Pochettino if they do want to bring the talented winger to London.
Thauvin might be a little sceptical of moving back to the Premier League after his failure to perform for the Magpies. Newcastle too have to decide if they want to see their former star back in the Premier League and with Rafa Benitez set to bring the side back to the top league, Thauvin might have something to prove to his former employers.
Our Verdict
The French winger would give Tottenham a lot of quality out wide if he were to sign. The 24-year-old does have experience of playing in England and Pochettino could turn things around for the Frenchman if he has his way.
Tottenham will be once again, playing a greater number of games and they would require cover for some of their stars next season. Thauvin would be a great option to have coming off the bench but it is interesting that this rumour is coming out right at a time when the Frenchman is doing well at his current club.
This could be a ploy to get a lot more for Thauvin should he decide to move away from Marseille and for now, it does seem highly unlikely that Pochettino would risk millions on a player that didn’t do well during his first spell in England.
