Tottenham superstar Christian Eriksen is wanted by Catalan giants Barcelona, as they attempt to strengthen themselves ahead of next season, according to reports from the Daily Mirror. Barcelona have struggled recently and have been found wanting in certain games, with the latest being their humiliating exit in the Champions League at the hands of Italian biggies Juventus.
In the league though, they somehow managed to salvage 3 points against Real Madrid this weekend, as Lionel Messi put on a world-class show to keep Barcelona alive in the La Liga title race. However, it now looks like Barcelona are planning for the future, with their focus now shifting on Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen.
“Eriksen has been scouted consistently since the turn of the year and it is understood that Barca could use ex-star Michael Laudrup as a go-between to convince him that a move to La Liga would be in his interests.”
Eriksen joined Spurs from Ajax in 2013 and hasn’t looked back since then. He has shown some steady development in his career and is one of Tottenham’s vital cog. The Dane has made 170 appearances for the Lilywhites and has 41 goals to his name. His quality has been one of the biggest strengths for Tottenham ever since Gareth Bale’s sale and has now become a stalwart at the North London club.
Despite Tottenham losing to Chelsea in the FA Cup semifinal, Eriksen was brilliant on the day and produced a wonderful display. His assist for Dele Alli’s equaliser was sublime and it highlighted the quality player that he is.
Eriksen has created 92 chances in the league so far, more than that of some of the top players in the league like Alexis Sanchez (72), Kevin De Bruyne (79), Philippe Coutinho (56) and Paul Pogba (55) (via Squawka.com). It would be safe to say that Barcelona have been linked with the best creator in the English Premier League.
Our Verdict
Surely, Eriksen will not be available on the cheap as he has a contract with Tottenham until 2020. Spurs would be under no pressure to sell him at all and so it will be difficult for Barcelona to try and negotiate a deal for the player.
Christian Eriksen’s best position has been identified as the No.10 role, in which he has been the most productive for Mauricio Pochettino. It is difficult to understand how Barcelona would use him if they manage to get him.
Surely, it wouldn’t be wise on Barca’s part to sign the player for a huge sum and make him warm the bench.
Our verdict is that there is no logic whatsoever in Barcelona being linked with a move for Christian Eriksen and Tottenham faithful can sleep peacefully as the Lilywhites continue to dream about life after moving to the new stadium.
