Tottenham are reportedly keen on breaking the club transfer record with the marquee signing in the summer. The club have identified Bayern Munich winger Douglas Costa as a potential signing and are ready to offer £30m for the 26-year old.
The winger has been starved of first-team opportunities under Carlo Ancelotti. He has featured only in 21 league appearances this season with only 13 from the start. He has been largely used as a super sub, and it appears that the situation may not change even with Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben coming towards the end of their careers. The duo have dominated the Bayern Munich set up over the last five years, and they are not keen on relinquishing this stranglehold anytime soon.
Costa is very concerned about his ability to feature in the team that he is ready to look for opportunities elsewhere. And Tottenham may be ready to offer him a way out of Allianz Arena. Moving to the Premier League outfit will make him a guaranteed regular starter if he manages to fit into the ethos of Mauricio Pochettino. The South American manager has not been one to tolerate mediocre performances even from the top signings. Mousa Sissoko was brought in the summer from Newcastle United for over
Mousa Sissoko was brought in the summer from Newcastle United for over £30 million, and he has struggled for first-team opportunities due to average performances.
It is widely expected that the Frenchman will be sold in the summer with much of the proceeds from the sale going towards the purchase of a new top midfielder. Costa could be one of the big names in the Premier League. Known for creating chances for his teammates and also scoring goals himself, the Brazilian will be a major addition to the Tottenham set-up, which is clearly heavily reliant on Dele Alli and Harry Kane in order to score the goals.
Costa’s current contract runs until the summer of 2020, thus placing Bayern Munich in a strong position when it comes to negotiating any transfer fee for the player. After having signed him from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer of 2015 for around €30 million, the German outfit will look forward to receiving a similar fee.
Spurs may be signing the player at a perfect time, as he is only 26 years old and still has plenty to offer in the game. Most of the signings made by Tottenham have been young with a focus on the future. Yet, signing ready-made first-team players is very important for the club in order to step up their game and probably win the Premier League.
