Tottenham Keen On £15m Premier League Defender With Kevin Wimmer Likely To Leave

Harry Maguire was still at Hull City when Poch took a liking to him

It looks like Hull City will be able to stay in the Premier League against all odds. One of the key factors behind Hull City’s recent form is Harry Maguire. The 24-year-old defender has managed to score two goals in his 26 league appearances.

However, he has already been linked with a move to Tottenham, according to Evening Standard. Manager Mauricio Pochettino seems to be building for the future, and have identified Maguire as a great candidate.

Only a few months ago, the club seemed certain for relegation after being stuck to the bottom of the table. However, there has been a tremendous rise in form since the arrival of Marcos Silva as the new manager. The manager has clearly focused on making Hull City extremely tough to beat in the home matches. Focusing on just the home matches has helped the club pick up an astonishing seven wins in the last eight games at the KCOM stadium. Harry Maguire has been a key factor behind this revival in form.

Maguire appears to be one of the several options Mauricio Pochettino has in his mind. The club also have been looking at Michael Keane of Burnley and Ben Gibson of Middlesbrough. However, Hull City’s recent form appears to have been a major positive over these two players, as conceding less than a goal per game has been a key factor.

More than his performances, the most attractive aspect of Maguire maybe his contract situation. His current deal with Hull City has just over 12 months to run. It effectively means that the club will struggle to agree a new deal with the player, especially if they are relegated. Furthermore, the prospect of challenging for honours at a consistent basis is something that Hull City will not be able to provide – especially in comparison with Tottenham. The player is reportedly on a contract worth around £20‑25,000-a-week, and he is at least looking to double his wages.

Maguire will be effectively capable of replacing Kevin Wimmer, who is widely expected to leave the club in the summer. Tottenham scouts have been in regular attendance for the Hull City matches and it is primarily to monitor the progress of Maguire. With the player being valued at around £15 million by Hull City, Tottenham believe that they will be able to sign the defender for less than that considering his contractual situation. Maguire joined Hull City back in 2014 from Sheffield United.
