The worst kept secret in the Premier League this season is all but done as Tottenham have finally confirmed that they will be playing their home games next season at Wembley.
The Lilywhites will be shifting to a new stadium built close to White Hart Lane but the old stadium will be demolished. Tottenham did play their European games this season at Wembley but that didn’t turn out so well with a number of lack-lustre performances by Mauricio Pochettino’s men.
Daniel Levy was quoted by Sky Sports as saying:
“Both on and of the pitch this is an incredibly exciting time in the history of our club. The Lane means a huge amount to each and very one of us and we needed to gain greater certainty on the delivery of the new stadium before we made the final decision to commence with the decommissions of our iconic, historic home. We shall ensure that we give the Lane a fitting farewell when we play our last match there on May 14.”
Levy also highlighted the fact that the new stadium would be one of the best in the world and that it would be hosting NFL games too.
“Wembley will be our home for a season and then we will return to what will be one of the best stadiums of its kind and the most unique in the world, playing host to NFL games too – a stadium that will be key to our future growth and success.”
The stadium will hold 61,000 fans not only for the football and American football games but will also be host to a number of concerts and other such events.
This does seem like a natural progression for Spurs as they are doing well in the Premier League. Tottenham could win the title this season should they overhaul Chelsea’s four-point lead at the top of the table.
Should they achieve that, it would be a fitting farewell to one of the most iconic stadiums in the country.
