Tottenham are clearly in the market for a new striker after Mauricio Pochettino seems to have given up on Vincent Janssen. The Dutch striker came to the club on a £18.5 million deal in the summer. However, he has been so poor that the 22-year-old has managed only seven starts in the league. Most of his 24 appearances have been as a substitute. He has only managed to score two goals in these 24 games. The 73 minutes that he clocked against Burnley a few weeks ago is the most amount of time that he has spent on the pitch in a single match since December.
As a result, the club have been looking at various options and Malaga forward Sandro Ramirez has emerged as one of the key targets. The report also claims that Tottenham tried to sign him during the winter transfer window. The Spaniard has been in fine form after scoring five goals in as many games in the last few weeks. He was signed from Barcelona in the summer on a free transfer, but his goals have certainly put him on the watch list of several top European clubs. At just 21 years of age, he has some way to go before being a finished product. However, the talent within the striker is clear and it is not a surprise considering that he graduated from the La Masia academy.
His recent form has seen the player take his tally to 12 goals in 26 league appearances for the campaign. Malaga were struggling against the threat of relegation for much of the season, but they have been able to make incredible strides up the La Liga table in recent weeks largely due to the goals from Ramirez. The 21-year-old even scored against Barcelona to help Malaga shake up the La Liga title race with a 2-0 win.
Even though his physical status may be considered as being frail for the Premier League, Mauricio Pochettino is confident about the player’s ability to succeed in England, according to Spanish publication El Desmarque. Ramirez will certainly get a lot of assistance in his first year in England, as the striker is not expected to be burdened with the responsibility to score goals straight away.
Harry Kane remains the top striker at Tottenham and will continue to do so next season. Any new forward joining the club will be aware of this hierarchy and will be ready to accept a place on the bench. This may be the significant aspect that could prevent Tottenham from moving further in the race to sign Ramirez.
After having primarily left Barcelona in the search of regular first-team football, it remains to be seen if the striker would be ready to sacrifice the same for Champions League football.
